Eagle Wings Montessori School, Madagascar
This is a community-driven initiative developed in partnership with Eagle Wings Montessori School in Antananarivo, Madagascar. The project will provide reliable, sustainable access to clean water by funding and installing a water tower, water storage tank, and solar-powered water pump at the school.
Eagle Wings Montessori School currently consists of three classrooms and serves approximately 70 students across three age groups: 3–6 years, 6–12 years, and 13–18 years. While the school has access to a well on-site, water must be manually collected each day to meet the needs of students and staff. In 2025, a small rainwater harvesting system was installed to supplement water availability during the wet season; however, the addition of a solar-powered pump and water storage system will significantly improve the school’s ability to access and manage water year-round.
Access to clean water is fundamental to the health, education, and well-being of every student. By harnessing renewable solar energy, this project will create a dependable and environmentally responsible water system while reducing reliance on grid electricity, which can be inconsistent and unreliable in Antananarivo.
The new infrastructure will support daily school operations by providing a consistent water supply for drinking, sanitation, handwashing, cleaning, and gardening activities. Beyond improving current conditions, the project will help create a safer, healthier learning environment and support the long-term sustainability of the school. Ongoing monitoring and reporting will ensure the system remains functional and continues delivering meaningful benefits to students and the broader school community.
Through international collaboration and local partnerships, this project demonstrates how targeted investments in basic infrastructure can strengthen educational opportunities, improve community resilience, and create lasting positive impact for future generations.
Project Cost
This project is designed to deliver a high-impact, sustainable water solution at a relatively modest cost. Funding provided through Building Humanity will cover the purchase and installation of a water tower, water storage tank, and solar-powered water pump, with payments made directly to local vendors in Antananarivo.
*Costs are based on vendor quotations and exchange rates at the time of project approval.
For just over $2,200 USD, this project will provide long-term access to clean water for approximately 70 students and school staff, eliminating the daily burden of manually collecting water and increasing the school's resilience during dry periods. The addition of solar-powered infrastructure ensures that the system remains operational even when grid electricity is unavailable, creating a reliable and environmentally sustainable solution for years to come.
Future Project Collaboration
Building Humanity and Eagle Wings Montessori School are committed to exploring additional opportunities to strengthen educational resources and sustainability initiatives. Future development goals include:
-
Construction of an additional classroom to accommodate up to 20 more students and expand access to quality education.
-
Development of a composting system for garden materials and food waste, creating both a valuable educational experience for students and a sustainable source of nutrient-rich compost for the school's gardening program.
-
Installation of a complete solar energy system to provide reliable, year-round electricity and further enhance the school's energy independence and resilience. Estimate for solar fit out is 37,000,000 MGA ($8,600 USD). We are actively looking for funding opportunities.
Together, these projects will support Eagle Wings Montessori School's vision of providing a sustainable, hands-on learning environment that empowers students while strengthening the surrounding community.
